Stop and smell the ... elk?!
So, over the weekend, I was out running on the trails in the snow (which I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to do) and I ran into two guys out snowshoeing. They were out searching for wildlife and pointed out an elk to me on a ridge right above us. They even let me borrow their binoculars to get a closer view. It was a little odd to see an elk from the trail I was on because they're typically much higher in the mountains - but with all the snow we've had this year, they're moving down. The typical "wildlife" animal I see or smell on this trail is a SKUNK - and I try (mostly successfully) to keep a bit of distance from them! Anyway, after checking out the elk with the two snowshoe guys, I ran around a bend in the trail and looked up to see a group of about 18 elk!! Lucky for me, I had my camera with me! Look closely and you can see a bunch of them below the rocks! (You might have to click on the pic and enlarge it ... I didn't get that close to them!)

Big Races...
So, this evening I just found out that I was one of the lucky people to get drawn in the lottery for the Wasatch 100! This will be the first year for me at Wasatch ... and I'm very excited about this! I've paced and crewed people at this race for the past three years, so it will be fun to see the other side of things this time around.

The other big race that I have on the calendar for this year is Primal Quest! http://www.ecoprimalquest.com

Although the Wasatch 100 is going to be huge for me, primal quest is in another league and it is very intimidating to me. If you haven't heard about this already, this is a multi-discipline race that includes navigation/orienteering, mountain biking, running/trekking, whitewater kayaking, whitewater swimming, and ropes stuff (ascending & rappeling). We will have up to 10 days to finish, although the elite teams will probably finish in 5 or 6 days. I'll add more information on this in future posts, as it will certainly be a big focus for me over the next several months!
I'm racing on a team with three guys from the east coast who are brave enough to sign me up on their team with "recommendations" from friends, but w/o even meeting me! I wonder if they've heard the song by Brad Paisley, "Online" - maybe they should be be concerned. :-) ...Or maybe I should be concerned! :-) LOL!
